Priscilla Presley, ex-wife of American rock and roll icon Elvis Presley, has just released a new memoir, ‘Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis.’
In the book, she writes about her tumultuous relationship with her and Elvis’s daughter, Lisa Marie, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 54.
She describes Lisa Marie’s wedding to her first husband, Danny Keough, when she was just 20 years old. The couple eventually divorced and remained good friends until her death. Lisa Marie later went on to marry pop legend Michael Jackson, actor Nicolas Cage, and musician Michael Lockwood, with whom she split in 2021.
Priscilla writes about her daughter’s relationship in the memoir, recalling how eager Lisa was to marry Danny because she “wanted him to belong to her.”
She keeps a photo of her daughter from her wedding day on a shelf. “She looks so young, so vulnerable, so hopeful,” she writes.
The young couple married in 1988 in an intimate ceremony at the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles, which was filled with white tulips and pink star lilies for the occasion. Just nine guests were present, and there was no press. Priscilla says Lisa Marie reminded her of an “old-fashioned porcelain doll.”
Lisa and Danny had two children together: actress Riley and son Benjamin, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 27.
They divorced in 1994 but maintained a close co-parenting relationship. Priscilla writes, “He was there for her the rest of her life, not quite lover, not quite brother, but always her best friend. Danny was the one who held Lisa in his arms when he found her lifeless on the floor. On their wedding day, he promised to love her until death did them part, and he kept that promise.”

Lisa died on January 12, 2023. She went into cardiac arrest after a small bowel obstruction, a complication from a previous bariatric surgery. She is interred next to her son at her father’s estate, Graceland, in Memphis, Tennessee.
After her daughter’s death, Priscilla and Riley, Lisa’s eldest child, entered a legal battle over control of the Presley estate. Riley is now the owner of Graceland and trustee of her mother’s estate.
