“Dexter: Original Sin” creator Clyde Phillips was blindsided when Paramount+ walked back its decision to renew the prequel series for season 2.

“It was a tough phone call that I got that night. They had already picked up the show, and I’d informed all the writers and informed all the actors, and then they un-picked it up,” Phillips said during a recent appearance on the “Dissecting Dexter” podcast. “It wasn’t handled well, and I’m not happy about it.”

Phillips, who served as showrunner on seasons 1-4 of the original “Dexter” series, also developed Paramount+’s “Dexter” reboot, “Dexter: Resurrection.” According to a Variety report, there are already plans to open a writer’s room for season 2 of “Resurrection,” but Phillips is mourning what could’ve been a larger “Dexter” franchise.

On the “Dissecting Dexter” podcast, Phillips claimed that former Paramount co-CEO Chris McCarthy “wanted the ‘Dexter’-verse to expand.”

“He wanted me to be his new Taylor Sheridan,” he said, referring to the creator of “Yellowstone” and its various spinoffs. “We plotted out a couple of years of this, looking forward to introducing new characters.”

According to Phillips, there were spinoffs in the works for younger versions of “Dexter” characters including James Doakes (Erik King), Captain Matthews (Geoff Pierson), and the infamous “Dexter” villain Trinity (John Lithgow).

Plans for the “Dexter”-verse stalled when Paramount merged with Skydance Media, Phillips said. That includes the Trinity prequel, which Phillips said is “on the back burner” for now.

“I honestly don’t think [Paramount+ is] going to go for it. I just think think they’re interested in ‘Resurrection,’” he said. “If they cancel ‘Original Sin,’ which is a built-in hit, how are they going to pick up ‘Trinity?’ If they do, I’d be delighted, but I don’t see them doing it.”

Fans were dismayed by the sudden cancelation of “Dexter: Original Sin.” An online petition demanding its return has over 100,000 signatures as of this writing. The prequel series, which premiered in December 2024, starred Patrick Gibson (Dexter Morgan), Molly Brown (Debra Morgan), and Christian Slater (Harry Morgan).

Michael C. Hall, who starred as the titular antihero in the original “Dexter” series (2006-2013), reprises his role in “Dexter: Resurrection.” The reboot, which premiered in July, also stars Uma Thurman (Charley), Jack Alcott (Harrison Morgan), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Blessing Kamara), Kadia Saraf (Claudette Wallace), Dominic Fumusa (Melvin Oliva), Emilia Suárez (Elsa Rivera), and James Remar (Harry Morgan).

“Dexter” and its spinoffs are available to stream on Paramount+.
