Reflecting on her time working with Luke Perry, who played Fred Andrews on Riverdale, Madelaine Petsch described him as a mentor and a guiding force. She explained that Perry helped her navigate sudden fame after landing the role of Cheryl Blossom on the CW drama. “Luke taught me so much,” Petsch said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “He was really a champion in my career, and he held my hand through the process, because he went through similar fame on 90210.”
She revealed that Perry’s wisdom came in the form of two simple but strong pieces of advice. “One is: don’t read anything about yourself, ever. I don’t listen to that, it’s really hard,” she admitted. The second lesson was about respect and teamwork on set: “The first thing you can do on a set is introduce yourself to every single crew member and remember all of their names.” Host Andy Cohen acknowledged their importance for young actors in Hollywood, calling it “very good advice.”
Luke Perry’s sudden death in March 2019 at age 52, after a massive stroke, shocked fans and colleagues alike. The Riverdale cast openly mourned his passing, calling him a father figure and a source of comfort on set. At the time, Petsch wrote an emotional tribute on Instagram, remembering Perry as “the most genuine & kind soul I will ever know.” She credited him for teaching her not just about acting, but also about kindness and building meaningful relationships.
With Riverdale ending in 2023 after seven seasons, Madelaine Petsch continues to carry Luke Perry’s lessons into her career.
