Kurt Cobain, from Washington, D.C., who battled drug addiction throughout his career, overdosed on heroin before a 1993 concert.

In a shocking turn of events, instead of dialing 911, his wife, Courtney Love, administered naloxone, a medication used to counteract the effects of opioids, reviving him. While touring Europe, Cobain was plagued by bronchitis, severe laryngitis, and chronic stomach issues.

Although some attributed these ailments to drug withdrawal, others speculated that they might be linked to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

In a 2021 article, journalist Michael Azerrad noted that few people took Cobain’s “crippling stomach pain” seriously.

Indeed, Cobain often criticized doctors in interviews, claiming that during “six years of being in constant pain”, medical professionals were unable to diagnose the root cause of his discomfort.

Initially diagnosed with scoliosis – a sideways curvature of the spine – as a youngster in school, the frontman revealed that the weight of his guitar worsened the condition, which fueled the “anger” in Nirvana’s music.

He is reported to have said: “My body is damaged from music in two ways. I have a red irritation in my stomach. It’s psychosomatic, caused by all the anger and the screaming.

“I have scoliosis, where the curvature of my spine is bent, and the weight of my guitar has made it worse. I’m always in pain, and that adds to the anger in our music.

“I had minor scoliosis in junior high, and since I’ve been playing guitar ever since, the weight to the guitar has made my back grow in this curvature. So when I stand, everything is sideways. It’s weird.

“That really adds to the pain in our music. It really does. I’m kind of grateful for it.”

It was attempting to manage his numerous health issues that reportedly led Cobain to substance abuse, but the icon’s drug struggles persisted throughout most of his career, with repeated efforts to keep him in rehabilitation. Stephen Fry’s “addictive impulse” began innocently with a love for sweets as a child, but eventually spiraled into a cocaine addiction.

In 2020, psychology professor Elizabeth Hartney, BSc, MSc, MA, PhD, shed light on the fact that stomach pain and diarrhea are major withdrawal symptoms of drug addiction. She stated: “Diarrhoea isn’t something many people feel comfortable talking about, but the distress caused by severe diarrhoea can be a major factor impacting the decision to quit drugs for many users.”

She further explained: “Diarrhoea and stomach pain from diarrhoea can be withdrawal symptoms among people who have been addicted to some drugs, particularly opiates, or even after a period of intense substance use. Symptoms may range from mild to severe.”

These symptoms occur post-drug use as the body and brain undergo changes. When under the influence of drugs, the brain adjusts to alterations in the functioning of neurotransmitters – chemicals in the brain that affect the nervous system.

However, when these substances are discontinued, it triggers more changes, unsettling the stomach.

Nonetheless, it’s crucial to understand that with appropriate treatment, stomach pain resulting from drug abuse can be alleviated. Hartney suggests certain measures to help manage these unpleasant symptoms.

Persistent alterations in bowel movements could also indicate IBS, a condition Cobain might have had. However, this claim remains unverified due to the similarity of symptoms with those related to drug use mentioned above.

Consequently, many people find relief from symptoms by regulating their diet and managing stress levels.

Health experts also advise individuals to stay well-hydrated, maintain regular physical activity, and ensure adequate sleep to help alleviate discomfort.
