Genndy Tartakovsky is one of the boldest and most exciting voices in animation. He’s the mind behind massive hits like Samurai Jack, Primal, Dexter’s Laboratory and so much more.
Even with all the success he has had, he’s still pushing to make ambitious projects. However, that doesn’t mean he can easily get funded. For years, Tartakovsky has been working on a film called The Black Knight. Unfortunately, it appears that Sony isn’t confident that it would be able to find an audience.
Desperate to get the project off the ground, Tartakovsky has decided to leak footage of The Black Knight.
“About 6 years ago we started development on a more adult animated action movie, The Black Knight,” Tartakovsky wrote on Instagram. “We developed it for a few years, the studio liked what we were doing but they were unsure if there is an audience that would go see it theatrically. We made a down and dirty test, and still no go. So to try something different I thought I would share the test to see if it can get a ground swell of excitement that would change the studio’s mind.
“I won’t share the details of the story except for one element, our Knight Armor is 20 feet high and controlled by a knight inside using ropes, pulleys, and levers. The setting is around the 14th century.”
As is always the case with Tartakovsky, the animation looks incredible. There’s not much to go off in terms of story from the trailer, but it looks like an exciting action-fantasy film. Here’s hoping that this move is able to garner enough excitement so Tartakovsky is able to get it funded.
