Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White is one of the most beloved children’s books of all time. It explores important themes of friendship and community, and guides young readers through the cycle of life, from birth to death and rebirth.
Well, a new adaptation of the beloved story is set to be released soon for streaming. Parents and children alike will be excited to learn that the limited series, produced by Sesame Workshop, premieres this Fall in three parts on HBO Max.
People got an exclusive first look at how this classic children’s story is being adapted for the small screen. Here’s what we know so far.
What is the Story of ‘Charlotte’s Web’?
In case you aren’t familiar, Charlotte’s Web is the story of the unique friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a barn spider named Charlotte. This special bond ultimately leads Charlotte to save Wilbur from slaughter when she weaves inspiring messages about him in her web for the world to see. In doing so, she changes not only how others perceive Wilbur but how he sees himself.
Series Stays Faithful to Book’s Central Themes
Kay Wilson Stallings, the Chief Creative and Production Officer at Sesame Workshop, notes that the retelling remains true to the book’s symbolism and themes of friendship, empathy, courage, and community. After capturing the hearts of so many readers already, she “can’t wait for families to fall in love with these characters all over again.”
An exclusive trailer provided to People showcases themes of friendship and acceptance. Our sweet spider, Charlotte, reassures a young Wilbur that he’s special even as he worries he’s simply a left-behind “runty pig.” She reminds him that his existence as her friend is a “tremendous thing” and that in lifting him up, she lifts herself a little as well.
Charlotte says, “I weave my webs for you because I like you. Because we’re friends.”
Big-Name Stars Lend Their Voices to the Classic Tale
This isn’t the first time this heart-warming tale has been reimagined for the screen. A 2006 live-action film starred Julia Roberts as the voice of Charlotte.
But this new retelling also features a star-studded cast. Amy Adams (Charlotte), Elijah Wood (Adult Wilbur), Cynthia Erivo (Goose), Natalie Chan (Fern), Randall Park (Templeton), Rosario Dawson (Edith), and Jean Smart (Narrator) all lend their voices to this charming animated tale.
Academy Award winner Luke Matheny (Ghoswriter) serves as showrunner and spoke with People about the “thrilling and daunting” task of adapting such a masterpiece.
“Thankfully, every writer, animator, actor, and producer rose to the occasion—and nobody more than the brilliant Amy Adams, whose Charlotte is one for the ages,” he says.
In fact, the cast and crew were so moved by the filmmaking process that many cried along the way.
Where to Watch ‘Charlotte’s Web’
