James Gunn recently addressed speculation about the DCU’s Batman reboot, directly responding to questions surrounding its release date. He confirmed that Batman: The Brave and the Bold will not be delayed until 2030 or 2031, ruling out rumors of such a distant release.

Responding to a Threads user who asked about the possibility of such a late release, James Gunn directly answered, “No.” The confirmation clarifies speculation about the timing of the project, which will introduce a new iteration of Bruce Wayne in the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
Andy Muschietti directs the film, first announced in January 2023, while a writer continues to work on the script. Gunn stated on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast that The Brave and the Bold will not release in the same year as Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, scheduled for October 1, 2027. As a result, the DCU Batman reboot will likely arrive in either 2028 or 2029.
Industry tracking points to 2028 as a realistic target, since no other DC film currently holds that slot. With the Dynamic Duo set for June 30, 2028, an October 2028 release remains possible, following the fall release pattern of The Batman Part II. A July 2029 release also remains an option, allowing greater distance between Reeves’ film and the DCU reboot.
DC Studios continues developing the project and enforces its policy of moving forward only after completing scripts. Early reports note story revisions, and Gunn confirmed casting talks for the new Batman.
If production starts in 2027, a late 2028 release would match DC Studios’ strategy of releasing two live-action films annually. The studio intends to balance Reeves’ standalone Batman franchise with the DCU’s shared slate, ensuring multiple versions of the character appear on screen under different creative approaches.
