One of the 1990s’ most prolific singer-songwriters was celebrated for their emotional, raw, and deeply personal storytelling. It’s no surprise, then, that their saddest song has become a viral sensation.
“Lover, You Should’ve Come Over,” released by Jeff Buckley in 1994, became an instant classic. Its lyrics convey the emotional turmoil of love and partnership, with music that sits at the heart of 1990s folk-rock-pop.
Today, music fans worldwide have latched onto the song, making it a TikTok hit. The tune currently has well over 300,000 videos made about it, with many users finding solace in Buckley’s lyrics.
The song is the seventh track on Buckley’s only studio album, Grace, released by Columbia Records on August 23, 1994. Grace’s track list blends Broadway standards like “Lilac Wine” with traditional hymns such as “Corpus Christi Carol” and a haunting rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” that became his most iconic and definitive performance.

(Lyrics by Genius)
“Looking out the door, I see the rain
Fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations
As their shoes fill up with water
Maybe I’m too young
To keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you’re on my mind
So you never know”
Buckley’s lyrics continue to resonate decades later, capturing heartbreak and longing in a way few songs can. It’s no wonder that fans on TikTok and beyond are finding new meaning in this timeless classic.
Jeff Buckley’s tragic legacy
Jeff Buckley died at the age of 30, according to PEOPLE Magazine. At the time of his death, he had moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he was writing the follow-up to Grace.
Buckley waded fully clothed into the Mississippi River, reportedly sober, singing along to Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” A wave from a passing riverboat swept him under, according to his roadie, Keith Foti, the last person to see him alive, as reported by American Songwriter.
His body was found six days later. PEOPLE Magazine wrote that an autopsy found Buckley had no drugs in his system, and only one beer. His death was ruled accidental.
The musician was cremated and his ashes were scattered at the Memphis Zoo. A plaque of his name overlooks the Sumatran Tigers exhibit.
Buckley’s life and career were further celebrated in the 2025 documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
