The Simpsons are headed back to the big screen.
On Monday, Sept. 29, Disney and 20th Century Studios announced on Instagram: “Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!”
A brand-new poster teased, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”
The animated sequel will debut 20 years after 2007’s The Simpsons Movie, which was the long-running television show’s first feature-length theatrical release. The PG-13 film proved to be a box-office success, earning over $536 million worldwide.

The Simpsons, created by Matt Groening, premiered in 1989 and recently began airing its 37th season on Fox. Its catalog of nearly 800 episodes is a continued streaming hit for Disney+.

“The Simpsons Movie” (2007)
Directed by David Silverman, 2007’s The Simpsons Movie followed Homer (Dan Castellaneta), Marge (Julie Kavner), Bart (Nancy Cartwright), Lisa (Yeardley Smith) and Maggie as their beloved town of Springfield was placed under a dome during an environmental crisis.
It earned nominations for Best Animated Film at the BAFTA Awards, Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes.
Back in 2007, Groening told BBC Movies about the popular TV show’s journey to the silver screen.
“We’ve been talking about doing a movie since 1992 but we’ve always been working on the show. We work on it all year round and we do 24 episodes a year. We didn’t have a team waiting in the wings ready to do a movie,” he explained. “But finally we said we were coming up to our 20th year of existence and our 400th episode, so we should get a movie out.”
