Evergrey release new song ‘A Burning Flame’

Every Friday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf and Lilliput Records co-owner Tanner Musgrove tell you about the new albums you can’t miss on a new episode of On Vinyl. Check out their top picks and a list of this week’s other releases, and listen to their full conversation using the player on this page or on the 88Nine airwaves at 1 p.m. every Friday.

This Friday, we’ve got the mixiest of mixed bags. But the strong through-line is that all projects are female-led or fronted, starting with Emily Hines and her small-scale portraits of life in the vein of modern folk, released by Keeled Scales Records (an indie favorite).

Moving down the list, Phantogram goes back to its beginnings and reminds its fans why they loved the band so much in the first place: slinky electronic vibes planted in a gauze-y sonic dreamscape. Those sounds embodied the band’s debut, Eyelid Movies, and fans can get their hands on a fancy reissue to fan the eternal flame of fandom.

We’ll also bop alongside Snõõper’s saucy and hyper brand of punk on their latest record, and shake it with some Brooklyn discodelic soul compliments of Say She She. It’s quite the musical journey, and we’re glad you’re joining us on it. Happy New Music Friday!

Best new albums out Oct. 3

Emily Hines, These Days

Emily Hines describes herself as a “chronically sincere farm girl from Ohio making folk rock.” She’s based out of Nashville these days, and her gentle songs center around seeking love and meaning in the era of late-stage capitalism. Officially released back in early August, These Days (a nod to Jackson Browne!) gets a fresher and more raw (aka explicit) version for Keeled Scales Records, and a fresh version is always a good reminder to pick up a record you might have missed the first time around.

If you haven’t heard this one yet and love slowcore artists like Duster or musicians that swirl modern and classic folk like Laura Marling and Karen Dalton, Hines will hit that sweet spot. Keeled Scales is releasing this particular version on olive green-colored wax with a bonus track not included on the digital version.

Phantogram, Eyelid Movies

Synth-y pop-rock duo Phantogram shared debut album Eyelid Movies back in 2010, and it’s getting a fresh reissue treatment a little over 15 years later from Barsuk Records.

When the record was originally released, similar artists like School of Seven Bells really amplified Phantomgram’s dreamy-yet-angular sound, which is a fingerprint for a distinct musical era. But the band has had remarkable staying power over the years — their most recent album, Memory of a Day, came out last year and got great reviews.

Rewinding back to where it all started, this new version of Eyelid Movies is considered to be an expanded edition and will include three previously unreleased studio tracks, b-sides, bonus tracks and alternate versions, as well as a side of instrumentals. The double LP is served up on beautiful yellow vinyl with black swirls.

Snõõper, Worldwide

Coming out on Third Man Records, Snõõper’s sophomore album is officially here, and they’re picking up right where they left off by checking all the boxes of modern punk rock: 1- to 2-minute songs, satirical lyrics and a DIY/lo-fi sound (it doesn’t hurt when there’s a female vocalist, too). Their sound might pack a punch, but it’s ultimately fun, and we could all use a little more of that! Worldwide is available on limited-edition pink vinyl or standard black.

Say She She, Cut & Rewind

Say She She introduced themselves to the world with 2022 debut Prism from lauded modern soul and funk label Colemine Records. The female-led, Brooklyn-based band has recently jumped labels to drink sum wtr but still seem to have close ties with their former home. You can get a Colemine-exclusive deep-mauve and black Rhodonite vinyl (limited to 300 copies) on their website and also pick up Cut & Rewind on indie-exclusive red vinyl or your standard black vinyl at a record store near you.
