Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez are both music icons, but that doesn’t mean they run in the same circle — or even know each other.
Carey, 56, went viral in 2003 for saying, “I don’t know her,” when being asked about Lopez, 56, on a German talk show. Now, Carey is spilling the tea on where she stands with the Grammy nominee.
“Can you believe how much ‘I don’t know her’ has become part of the lexicon?” Andy Cohen asked Carey during the Wednesday, October 1, episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.
Carey reflected on her now-iconic quote, saying, “The thing is, I was being honest when I said it. So, I don’t know how it became so big. Honesty isn’t really something that becomes big most of the time.”

Cohen, 57, then asked what fans have been wanting to know for years: “To clarify, you still do not know her, right?”
Carey sighed before replying, “How could I suddenly know [her], you know?”
Her unfiltered response caused the studio audience to break into laughter and left Cohen nodding his head in agreement.
“The amount of time we have spent in these chairs discussing whether you know her is amazing,” he said with a laugh.

Carey and Lopez’s friendship — or lack-thereof — has been a topic of conversation since Carey quipped, “I don’t know her,” in the early 2000s amid both women’s rising careers.
A decade later, Carey sparked feud speculation when she didn’t immediately give Lopez a standing ovation following Lopez’s 10-minute performance during the May 2013 season finale of American Idol.
Carey, who performed earlier in the show, smiled as the three other judges quickly stood to applaud Lopez. Following the alleged slight, Carey’s rep told Us Weekly in a statement that it was a wardrobe issue that caused the singer’s delayed reaction.

“Mariah did stand up and gave Jennifer Lopez a standing ovation,” the rep explained in May 2013. “She was wearing a heavily beaded Tom Ford dress that was not easy to maneuver, but she absolutely gave J. Lo a standing ovation.”
Lopez, meanwhile, told Cohen on a June 2014 episode of Watch What Happens Live that her alleged feud with Carey didn’t exist.
“I know from back in the day, I’ve read things that she’s said about me that were not the greatest, but we have never met,” Lopez said at the time. “Like, we don’t know each other. I think it’s kind of from word of mouth of things that have happened in the past that I’m not really aware of. But I don’t know.”
The “Jenny From the Block” singer added that she didn’t hold a grudge over the viral meme and claimed, “I would love to meet her and I would love to be friends with her. I think she’s incredibly talented and I’ve always been a fan of hers. ‘My All’ is one of my favorite songs of all time. I just love her. It saddens me to hear anything that’s negative because I’m a fan of hers.”
One year later, however, Lopez was accused of having beef with Carey after she was caught texting during Carey’s 2015 Billboard Music Awards performance.
“There isn’t [a feud]. I’ll tell you why. Let me tell you something. OK, first of all, that was not fair with the texting thing because I watched a lot of it,” Lopez told Cohen in February 2016 during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. “It was a long performance, OK? I watched most of it.”

The Wedding Planner actress noted, “I may have looked down for one second, and people were like, ‘Look at her! Look at her!’ So not fair. So not fair. I was watching her the whole time.”
Carey, meanwhile, addressed her infamous 2000s quip about Lopez in November 2018, telling Pitchfork it was never meant to be a dig.
“I really was trying to say something nice or say nothing at all,” she explained. “I try to stay away from it because you can’t drown in that. I don’t know how people read comments all the time and then survive.”
