I always get a little excited when a movie’s reputation precedes it, especially when it causes film buffs and critics alike to act both scandalized and titillated by what they have seen. Granted, most of these movies end up being disappointments, but some live up to their riotous reputation. One such film is Titane, the mindbending, car-loving movie now streaming for free on Tubi.
In Titane, we follow the bizarre adventures of a woman who survived a childhood car crash and now has a titanium plate in her head. She grows up to become an automobile showgirl and secret serial killer who loves cars a little too much. To that end, she actually has sex with a Cadillac, resulting in a body transformation so freakish that it would make David Cronenberg blush.
If you like international cinema, you may recognize some of Titane’s stars, including Vincent Lindon (best known outside this movie for The Measure of a Man) as a father who deals with grief in a way nobody would expect. And Garance Marillier (best known for Raw) plays the main character’s coworker, one who isn’t quite ready for “bring your crazy to work” day. Additionally, Myriem Akheddiou (best known outside this movie for Kid With a Bike) plays an ex-wife who is forced to keep a positively insane secret.
The most impressive performance comes from Agathe Rousselle (best known outside this film for Cassandra) as our lead, playing a character whose every decision will have you screaming at your TV. She plays on the most provocatively weird characters to ever grace the silver screen, but her performance never drifts into camp because the actor is just so compelling. Like, a movie where a woman has sex with a car sounds like it might be funny, even by accident, but Rousselle imbues the most surreal scenes with profoundly fierce earnestness that you can’t help but take deadly seriously.
It has one of the craziest plots in cinema, but that didn’t keep this cinematic vehicle from driving critics absolutely wild. On Rotten Tomatoes, this unconventional thriller has a score of 90 percent, with critics lauding this film for its provocative nature and highly original narrative. That praise of the movie’s innovative plot is particularly well-deserved: even those who hate this bizarre movie are the first to admit it’s like nothing else (for better or for worse) than they’ve ever seen before.
With critical scores that high, it’s no surprise that Titane managed to take home some seriously impressive awards. For example, it won the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021; if you don’t already know, this is a major award that honors the director of the best feature film of the festival. Director Julia Ducournau took home this highly prestigious award, and even though Titane didn’t make the shortlist, her provocative film was France’s Academy Award entry for Best International Feature Film.
