Kristen Wiig Didn’t Expect Bridesmaids To Blow Up

Kristen Wiig’s reflection on her film “Bridesmaids” isn’t the whimsical walk down the aisle that you might expect.

The comedy, which hit theaters in 2011, had many people filled with uncontrollable laughter, but for Wiig, that reaction didn’t fully resonate at first.

“I don’t really think I knew how well it was doing until later,” Wiig revealed to her former “SNL” castmate Amy Poehler during a Sep. 30 interview on her podcast.

The question was sparked when Poehler asked the actor how she managed to balance her “SNL” workload with the release of a film Poehler described as “gigantic,” and “incredible.”

Looking back, Wiig and her writing partner for the film Annie Mumolo didn’t have a “holy shit” moment until after the film had already made its mark.

“I remember after opening weekend they were like, ‘Well, we tried,’” she said.

Wiig admitted that the pressure of the box office weighed on her, shaping how she initially viewed the movie’s success.

“We just thought like that was it,” Wiig continued. “And then I think more and more people kept seeing it and it kind of happened later.”

She described the hit comedy as a “grower,” one that gradually built momentum through word of mouth.

Poehler pointed out that the film came out “twenty years ago,” and that “it still remains a lot of people’s favorite comedy.”

While reflecting on the powerful nature of the film, Poehler concluded by saying that it is “a superior piece of work.”
