Prince William may only have been first in line to the throne for a few years, but he has been learning about what life as a king will look like for much longer. When growing up, it is believed William, now 43, had various chats with his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, about what his future would entail—lessons he will no doubt pass on to his own son and second-in-line to the throne, Prince George.
Although William is not yet bearing the weight of the crown, with his father King Charles instead holding this title, his future role is something he has admitted to thinking about at times. And as well as simply thinking about, the prince is reportedly already looking at the changes he wants to make.
However, while William – who has been a working royal for many years now – may have the skillset and knowledge needed to step up to the throne when the time comes, it is not these factors that will make him a great king. Instead, it is simply him.
As a royal expert, I spend my days writing about all things royal, past, present, and future. When it comes to stories about Prince William, I am frequently reminded of why he will achieve great success in his role as monarch, perhaps even making him the best King we have ever seen.
This is because, as well as his knowledge and ability to excel in his royal duties, his personality is unlike any monarch we have seen before.
In fact, I would go as far as to argue that he is one of the most down-to-earth royals out there, showing us sides of him that make him seem not too dissimilar to me or you.
Whether that be his enthusiasm in the Aston Villa football stands, his love for an e-scooter, or his cracking sense of humour, William really will be a king people can relate to.
And his relatability does not stop there. Because just this week, William appeared on the latest episode of The Reluctant Traveller with Canadian actor Eugene Levy.
While William may have shown Eugene some of the most impressive parts of royal life during a tour of Windsor Castle, what he said made the whole thing seem quite surreal.
Although he has access to castles and palaces, staff and security, the prince made some admissions in his recent TV appearance that showed how similar his emotions are to those we all share. When talking about some health battles his loved ones have faced, the King’s oldest son showed that being royal does not make you immune to some of the most powerful human emotions of love, worry and fear.
By making these admissions, and by simply being him day-in day-out whether that be at football matches, royal engagements or on his electric scooter, William is carving the way to be a very successful king.
