California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) used the release of pop sensation Taylor Swift’s newest album last week to troll President Donald Trump.
Swift’s highly anticipated twelfth album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” soared to the top of the charts shortly after its release on Friday. As Swifties celebrated her new album, Newsom joined in on the fun with a video that included one of the pop star’s new songs, titled “Actually Romantic.”
The lyrics describe a one-sided feud with Swift, with her singing that someone’s obsession with her is “actually romantic.” Newsom used the song to mock Trump’s frequent criticism of him in a video posted to Instagram over the weekend.
The video begins with footage of Newsom and Trump walking together as “Actually Romantic” begins to play.
“But it’s actually sweet, all the time you spent on me,” Swift sings as a video appears on the screen showing Newsom and Trump shaking hands.
“It’s honestly wild, all the effort you’ve put in,” the song continues as screenshots of Trump’s social media posts targeting Newsom appear on the screen.
“It’s actually romantic. I really gotta hand it to you,” the song continues. “No man has ever loved me like you do.”
The video included a screenshot of Trump declaring that Swift is “no longer ‘HOT’”. The video then showed a screenshot of Newsom’s press office writing on X that Trump is “no longer ‘hot.’”
It then showed a tank top from Newsom’s “Patriot” apparel shop that states, “Trump is not hot.”
Trump has held a long-time feud with Swift, posting in September 2024,“I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,” on his Truth Social platform. Swift ultimately endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris for the White House last year.
Newsom has also escalated his attacks on Trump in recent months.
Newsom’s press office has been mocking Trump by mimicking the president’s social media posts for months, often tweeting posts in all-caps and giving his political rivals new nicknames. The MAGA base and conservatives have complained about Newsom’s new social media strategy, with many arguing that he is not being authentic.
Newsom even took the trolling a step further last month by launching his own merchandise shop that plays off Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
An analysis from celebrity.land data guru Harry Enten in August found that Newsom’s new social media strategy is “absolutely” working, citing an increase in social media followers and Google searches. He said on “Laura Coates Live” that Newsom’s press office account on X has increased its following by 450% since mid-June.
