A “nervous” Prince Harry turned to his wife, Meghan Markle, to lead as the pair made a rare joint red carpet appearance this week, a body language expert said.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the Project Healthy Minds’ third annual World Mental Health Day Gala on Thursday night and will be at the World Mental Health Day Festival today.
As clips and photos of the pair at the gala emerged online, fans of the couple said the Sussexes appeared “unbothered” by their critics.
Now, body language expert Judi James has also offered her professional opinion, saying that Harry appeared to show “some nerves” while Meghan had a calmer attitude.
Speaking exclusively to the Express US, Judi said Meghan was quite different from her recent appearance at Paris Fashion Week – but she noted that there were some similarities in her body language.
She continued, “Meghan’s body language role seems to be one of ‘Gracious sweetener.’ Neither perform wide mouth smiles but her undulating facial movement, her gentle eye smile and her trait of saying ‘Thank you’ to the photographers as Harry tows her along the red carpet suggest a softer approach to the press.
“The clasped hands signal this is still a double act although it’s a relaxed clasp to suggest a calm approach here.”
Judi said Harry walked ahead “like the leader” but not before glancing at his wife as a sign of approval that they should move to the next spot while taking photos on the red carpet.
The expert explained, “Meghan seems to be back seat driving here. Harry walks ahead like the leader but it’s her glance that acts as a tie-sign to signal they should walk to the next spot.”
Noting some nervousness on Harry’s part, Judi concluded, “Harry’s jacket fiddling and handwringing at the lectern suggest he still suffers from some nerves during speeches, but Meghan waits calmly at his side, watching his face and performing a rounded-cheek expression of a more serene smile.”
At last night’s gala, Harry and Meghan urged parents to stand against social media companies that they said prey upon children with exploitative algorithms as the “explosion of unregulated artificial intelligence” adds to their concerns that technologies’ benefits are inseparable from its dangers.
To underscore that point, the Sussexes cited research from advocacy group ParentsTogether that found researchers posing as children experienced harmful interactions every five minutes they spent with an artificial intelligence chatbot.
“This wasn’t content created by a third party. These were the companies’ own chatbots working to advance their own depraved internal policies,” said Harry at Spring Studios in Manhattan as he and Markle were named Humanitarians of the Year by the nonprofit Project Healthy Minds.
“But here’s what gives us hope: these families aren’t facing this alone.”
To build their movement of families fighting for online safety, the couple also announced Thursday that their foundation’s Parents Network would join forces with ParentsTogether.
