If Taylor Swift’s Life of a Showgirl is dominating your playlist, welcome to the club. Whether you’re a new Swiftie or you’ve been a fan since Fearless came out in 2006, Taylor Swift fans are everywhere.
Country music stars Dan and Shay (Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) are proudly showing their Swiftie status—and even covering one of her earlier songs with an a cappella version of their own.
Dan and Shay Tease Acoustic “Back to December” Cover
A week ago, the Tennessee natives teased an unplugged version of “Back to December” from Swift’s 2010 album Speak Now.
Fans immediately begged for more, writing comments like, “I need y’all to make a cover of this available to stream! Sooooo goood & one of my faves!” and “Yep, we NEED this on the next tour setlist thank ya.”
What Dan and Shay’s fans want, they get. The duo announced Friday that they’ve stepped back into the studio to record a full version of Swift’s song.
“We did an impromptu cover of Back To December by @taylorswift at soundcheck the other day and a lot of people asked for a full version. Well, we heard you (and we had today off), so we’re heading into the studio to record one. Gonna try to turn it around as quickly as we can, so stay tuned for updates on our progress!”

“Back to December”: A Swift Classic Revisited
Before Taylor Swift dominated pop music charts with catchy bops and deep, thought-provoking lyrics about love gone wrong (or right—thank you, Travis Kelce), she was known for her country-pop power ballads like “Back to December.”
The song peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 3 on the Hot Country Songs chart. It has been widely praised by music critics for its production value and mature lyrics.
Inspired by Swift’s relationship with actor Taylor Lautner, the song—and the entirety of Speak Now—was written by Swift starting when she was just 18.
Thanks to Dan and Shay, “Back to December” is returning to its country roots and reaching an entirely new audience all over again.
