Julianne Moore reveals the unique fitness tip she has followed ever since it was given to her by a trainer in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE

Julianne Moore stays in tip-top shape — both physically and mentally — thanks to an out-of-the-ordinary tip.
“I remember I had a trainer who used to say, ‘You should take the opportunity to walk backwards,’ ” the actress, 64, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.
“So every once in a while, I just go ahead and walk backwards, especially up a hill, because it’s so good for your body and brain, because your brain’s like, ‘Whoa, what’s that?’ ” Moore continues.
Adds the Oscar, Emmy and SAG-award winner: “Anything that gets you out of your normal routine — meeting new people, learning a new game, a language — all of those things are things that kind of wake you up.”
“I know that I feel more alive when I’m doing that. It just makes everything better to learn something new, or even silly things,” Moore further explains.

Moore, who partnered with Lilly to launch its new Brain Health Matters campaign, says she has learned to take her overall health more seriously as she’s grown older and wiser.
“When you’re younger, you don’t think about much at all. I mean, you really feel impervious to everything, and to anything health and wellness related,” she tells PEOPLE. “But I think, the more life you’ve accrued, the more precious it becomes.”

Now, as a wife to husband Bart Freundlich and a mom to their two kids — son Caleb, 27, and daughter Liv, 23 — Moore says taking care of herself, she has realized, then takes care of others.
“You have more people that you’re taking care of, you have more people that you love, and you realize that you depend on your body, and if something goes wrong with your body, then it really affects your function,” she says.
“You tend to take things for granted until something happens, but you also learn about the things that will ensure that you can continue to do the stuff that you care about, like exercising regularly, eating well, sleeping — all of those things that help you perform to the best of your ability,” continues the star.
