It has been 15 years since the last film directed by master of horror John Carpenter, but at the age of 77, the director behind Halloween, The Thing, and Escape From New York is still touring his music alongside collaborators Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. The trio have records four albums of original music with Lost Themes and scored four films together — including David Gordon Green‘s Halloween trilogy.
So why can’t we get another John Carpenter movie?

An actual follow-up to The Ward may still be a pipe dream for now, but a new project actually on the horizon will be the closest we’ve come to a new Carpenter film in a decade and a half.
Speaking with Gold Derby ahead of some upcoming live shows alongside son Cody and Davies, Carpenter shared exclusive details of their next creative project, Cathedral, which came to him — appropriately enough — in a nightmare.
Planned for release in 2026, Cathedral is not a continuation of Lost Themes, but a standalone record, telling one story, written by Carpenter’s subconscious.
Cathedral began as a literal dream for the filmmaker. Upon waking, Carpenter thought he had the makings of a new film. “I thought it was a movie,” he said. “It was a story — a movie story. But I told Daniel, and he said, ‘Let’s do it.’ “
The trio proceeded to record an album that would have served as the score for the story Carpenter dreamt. “The idea behind Lost Themes is that it’s the score to the movie in your mind,” Davies said. “But Cathedral is the score to the movie in John’s mind.”
At a recent concert in New York, the trio debuted a track from the album, titled “Lord of the Underground,” with a sound more heavy metal-influenced than Carpenter’s previous output. “It’s a totally different sound for us,” Carpenter said. “We keep exploring and moving ahead. That’s survival.”
Packaged with the album for Cathedral will be a retelling of the story as Carpenter experienced it, but he has further plans for the tale, revealing that he’s also at work on a graphic novel adaptation through his Storm King Comics.
So while we may not be getting a new John Carpenter movie just yet, but fans won’t have to wait much longer to share in one of iconic nightmares.
