Diane Keaton’s death certificate has shared insight into the actress’ final days.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Academy Award-winning actress passed away at age 79.
Following the initial announcement, her family has come forward with an emotional message and more details about the cause of death. Now, fans have even more clarification as her death certificate has been obtained, revealing new insight into the health battle that led to her passing.
The official report confirms Diane succumbed to primary bacterial pneumonia.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, the lung infection is caused by bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae, leading to inflammation and fluid in the lungs. Symptoms include a high fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, chills and fatigue.
Diane’s death certificate states no other factors contributed to her passing.
On the same day the document was released, a friend came forward with more details on the actress’ final moments.
The insider claimed to TMZ she had been battling another unknown illness for a while and her death was “not a shock.”
During her last couple of months, Diane was “surrounded only by her closest family.” Her friends “weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”
Since her passing, several Hollywood stars have come forward with heartfelt tributes including her Something’s Gotta Give co-star Keanu Reeves. The actor told E! News, “She was very nice to me. Generous, generous artist and a very special, unique person.”
Her family has also issued a statement saying, “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11.”

Diane has been consistently in the spotlight since the 1970s when she starred as Kay Adams-Corleone in the Godfather franchise. Since then, she has lended her talent to blockbuster films like Father of the Bride, Book Club, and Annie Hall, which awarded the actress her one and only Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978.
She last appeared on screen in 2024 in the comedy film Summer Camp alongside Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.
