“Black Phone 2” was all the buzz at the box office this Friday, taking first place with $10.78 million in earnings for its opener, according to The Numbers.
The supernatural thriller, which The Hollywood Reporter called an “effective horror sequel” to its 2021 predecessor, stars Ethan Hawke reprising his role as a masked serial killer.
It cost $30 million to make and is expected to rake in a three-day total of $24.4 million, as per Deadline.
In second place was “Tron: Ares,” the third film in the Tron series and a sequel to 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” with a $3 million haul.
The Post called it “the first ‘Tron’ film with a discernible plot, which “brings a welcome pulse of clarity and humanity to a franchise that heretofore has picked hard drives over heart.”
“Good Fortune,” Aziz Ansari’s feature directorial debut, landed in third, scoring $2.4 million in revenue.
The action-comedy, starring Ansari, Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh, tackles the issue of wealth disparity.
Time Magazine said “it’s silly and funny, and you never feel you’re trapped in a civics lecture.”
Ansari explained the premise of the film to The Gate.
“I had this idea of these two guys. One guy that’s been blessed by the last 20 years, put his money in crypto and tech and has a giant mansion in LA, and then the other guy who’s been screwed by the last 20 years and is burdened with debt, his rent went up, he lost his apartment, he lost his job,” he said.
“LA is a city where those two guys could be right next to each other in the same coffee shop, and how do you tell that story about their worlds colliding?”
In fourth was “Truth & Treason” — the drama based on the true story of 17-year-old Helmuth Hübener, who was executed because he opposed the Nazi regime during WWII — with sales of over $1.15 million.
Landing Taking fifth was “One Battle After Another,” which took in $1.1 million on its fourth Friday in theaters.
