President Donald Trump is facing criticism after telling reporters that ‘kings don’t work’ during a media interview.

Following a weekend full of widespread and historic protests across the country to stand up against Trump’s far-right regime, the president, 79, commented on the protests titled No Kings Day. “I’m not a king. I work my a– off to make our country great. That’s all it is. I’m not a king at all,” he said.

The clip circulated online where a viewer responded on X, “Kings don’t work???? That’s a nasty backstab to your good mate Charles!!!” The user further commented, “Some Kings are his friend, he just says Kings don’t work, so he is saying something bad about his friends, ie, backstabbing.”

That remark was taken as an offense by those watching closely during Trump’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, which included a formal visit hosted by King Charles, 76.

From September 16 to 18 2025, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were guests of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, attending a carriage procession at Windsor Castle, inspecting a Guard of Honour and taking part in a state banquet.

At the banquet, Trump praised the “special relationship” between the U.S. and the U.K., calling it “irreplaceable and unbreakable.”

During the visit, he also met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the country residence Chequers, where the two leaders signed agreements covering trade and investment between the two countries.

Given that backdrop, the phrase “kings don’t work” was interpreted by social-media users as undermining the king, who welcomed him, leading to the “backstab” accusation.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the protests known as the No Kings protests have been in full force. On October 18, 2025, protesters gathered in thousands of cities across the country.

Organizers estimate over 2,700 protest sites and nearly 7 million participants. Major cities included New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Seattle and Portland.

Celebrities participating included actors and directors such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Ben Stiller, Glenn Close, Spike Lee, Cecily Strong and Kerry Washington, who posted photos or appeared at rallies in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.

Organizers say the protests were largely peaceful, though law-enforcement reports indicate some incidents of arrests and vehicle-related injuries in certain cities.
