A clever canine is being hailed as a hero after miraculously helping cops find an elderly Florida woman who had fallen and was injured while taking him for a walk.
According to police, the drama began on the night of Sept. 25 with a desperate call from a “distraught husband” to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office claiming his 86-year-old wife hadn’t returned from walking her son’s dog, Eeyore. The woman reportedly fell and injured herself while walking the pooch in the Destin area, say authorities, per The Northwest Florida Daily News.
“She just takes that dog, but she never takes more than 10 or 15 minutes,” the worried man told Devon Miller, an Okaloosa county sheriff’s deputy, who responded to the call.
“It’s almost an hour now. It’s over an hour now.”
The deputy began driving through the streets of the neighborhood in Destin, a panhandle beach community known for its white sand and emerald waters, in search of the missing woman.
But before too long, she spotted Eeyore — a 7-year-old shepherd-Rottweiler mix — roaming around in the middle of the road!
“I was really worried at the start of the call because it was nighttime and wooded. But when he ran up to my car he was really excited,” recalls the deputy.
“Maybe he can lead me to her,” she wondered. “I’ve seen movies where it’s happened.”
As soon as she got out of her car and grabbed the leash, Eeyore was on a mission.
And amazingly, the clever pooch took Miller straight to the missing woman.
“When he came up to my car his tail was wagging and happy, and panting … but the second I got the leash, he practically dragged me to her,” Miller says.
While the deputy is being praised, she gives all the credit to the pooch.
“Eeyore is the main hero here. He deserves lots of belly rubs. He deserves a steak dinner. That dog did everything. He’s the true hero.”
