After the breakout success of It Ends With Us, another Colleen Hoover novel is making its way to the big screen. Regretting You, directed by The Fault in Our Stars filmmaker Josh Boone, reimagines Hoover’s 2019 novel as a sweeping mother-daughter drama about loss, betrayal, and rediscovery. The Paramount Pictures film opens in theaters today.
The movie stars Allison Williams as Morgan Grant, a young mother whose life is upended when a tragic car accident exposes a web of secrets that threatens to pull her family apart. Mckenna Grace plays her teenage daughter, Clara, while Dave Franco and Mason Thames round out the ensemble as the men caught in their orbit. Hoover’s story centers on what happens after grief.
Production wrapped earlier this year in Atlanta, with Boone reuniting with producers Brunson Green and Flavia Viotti. “There are so few movies that come out in theaters nowadays that aren’t big spectacle movies,” Boone told Entertainment Weekly in July. “It seems really special to get a grounded human drama in a movie theater that’s great for moms and daughters to go see together.”
Williams, who also stars in M3GAN 2.0, told Interview that taking on Morgan felt both daunting and fated. “People have a very clear idea of Morgan,” she said. “It raises the bar. You’re like, ‘Okay, I’ve got to really make sure I hit this nail on the head.’ There’s two approaches. The very actor-y one is like, ‘Fuck what everyone pictures, I’m going to come at it fresh.’ And then there’s the one that I took, which is to torture myself trying to be what everyone else wants for this character.”
She added that learning Hoover had imagined her for the role was “incredibly flattering.” She explained, “I was like, if the author herself can picture me in this part, then I’m coming in with a certain amount of goodwill.”
Of his character Jonah, Franco told Entertainment Weekly, “I usually play either villains or very morally corrupt characters, which is also very fun, but it’s nice to play a character that is hopefully a little bit closer to who I am in real life.”
Viotti added that fans of the book will still recognize the heart of Hoover’s story. “We try to keep as close to the book as possible,” she said. “We know Colleen Hoover has a strong fan base, and we don’t want to disappoint them. But I don’t think fans will be disappointed.”
Is Regretting You streaming yet?
Not yet. Regretting You premieres exclusively in theaters on October 24. Given its Paramount Pictures release, it’s likely to stream later on Paramount+ following its theatrical run.
