While talking to NPR, Guillermo del Toro made a poignant statement against the use of AI. The incredible director has stated that he’d rather die than use generative AI. While that may seem like an outlandish sentiment, it is one that many in the industry identify with. AI-generated content is easily one of the worst things to happen to his generation. It doesn’t provide any additional value to any medium and can only borrow from other people’s hard-earned work. Nothing AI does is original in any way. It has become a growing indicator of which studios are lazy enough to cut corners and which will stick to traditional methods.
“The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I’d rather die,’ del Toro told NPR.
Given the scale and reach of Guillermo del Toro’s work, it isn’t surprising that he would have such a staunch stance on artificially generated content. He has created some of the most impressive films on a cinematic scale in movie history, so it’s likely that a lot of AI-generated content is already stealing from his work. Even if it isn’t, AI is only capable of creating an approximation of the amazing creations that Guillermo del Toro makes commonplace in his pieces.
Guillermo del Toro’s most recent film is an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. So far, the film has been extremely well received and has already been called the best Horror film of the season. It has gotten widespread critical acclaim and a near-perfect score across the board. While this is in part due to the incredible acting of Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth, it is also thanks to del Toro’s incredible direction.
Artificial Intelligence is easily one of the worst things to happen to this generation. In many ways, it signals the death of the original idea in media. While AI could be used to do the jobs that humans didn’t want, it has taken the place of many important jobs in the industry. While many studios have shied away from the subject for fear of public backlash, it won’t be long before many companies have to decide once and for all if they will use the despicable application.
In the end, like many in the industry, Guillermo del Toro has taken a strong stand against AI. While talking to NPR, he said that he would rather die than use AI in a project. Many in the industry completely agree. Overall, AI is one of the most important things in the industry right now, not for the sake of creators, but for the safety of creativity itself.
