Dave Franco has two big movies in theaters this month, but he’s pushing back against the idea that he owes his success to his older brother.

The Palo Alto native admitted that James Franco, who is seven years his senior and first broke through in 1999 on the TV series “Freaks and Geeks,” helped him get an agent and get his foot in the door. But he says he did the rest himself.

“No one was going to hire me just because I was James Franco’s little brother,” Dave Franco said in an interview with Bustle published Tuesday, Oct. 28. “If I sucked, I would’ve disappeared very quickly.”

The younger Franco began his career with small roles in films such as “Superbad” (2007) and the San Francisco-shot “Milk” (2008), before breaking through with a starring role in the final season of the comedy series “Scrubs” (2009–2010). He went on to supporting roles in the buddy comedy “21 Jump Street” (2012) and “Now Your See Me” (2013).

This month he is starring in the romantic drama “Regretting You,” the latest adaptation of a novel by Colleen Hoover (“It Ends With Us“), which topped the box office over the weekend and has taken in more than $50 million in its first two weeks.

Franco is also part of the ensemble cast of “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” the third movie in the illusionist-heist series that opens Nov. 14. He has been a part of all three films with Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo and Morgan Freeman.

Earlier this year, Franco starred with wife Alison Brie in the indie horror film “Together” and appeared in three episodes of Seth Rogan’s popular Apple TV+ series “The Studio.”

Interestingly, Rogen cast Franco despite the fact he is apparently no longer friends with James, whose career has been derailed by allegations of sexual misconduct from five women, four of whom were his acting students.

Franco told Bustle that James is thrilled for him and his ascending career.

“At this point, I think he’s excited just to see me trying new things and to see me grow,” Franco said.
