Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, has lost his royal titles and his last military title, but King Charles will allow his younger brother to keep his Falklands War campaign medal. The Telegraph was the first to report the news, writing “Buckingham Palace has now confirmed that Andrew’s Falklands medal will be retained alongside all operational service medals.” Andrew served in the Royal Navy for over twenty years, including in the Falklands War as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot.
In 2022, he returned the majority of his military titles, including colonel of the Grenadier Guards, colonel-in-chief of the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada, and colonel-in-chief of the Royal New Zealand Army Logistic Regiment. He held on to his honorary rank of vice admiral of the Royal Navy, but this weekend, the UK Defense Secretary John Healey confirmed Andrew would be stripped of that rank as well.
Andrew lost his remaining royal and military titles amid the publication of a posthumous memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who previously accused him of sexual assault. (Andrew has always denied the allegations.) Guiffre’s family applauded King Charles’s decision to remove Andrew’s titles, saying, “An ordinary American girl from an ordinary American family, brought down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage.”
It’s unlikely a new investigation will be opened into Andrew, who remains eighth in line to the British throne, though police are looking into claims that he asked a royal protection officer to look into Giuffre. Andrew will move out of Royal Lodge, and into a property on the King’s private Sandringham Estate. No specific timeline has been set for his move.
