Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is said to be spending his final days at Windsor’s Royal Lodge “ranting to himself” while his ex-wife Sarah Fergusons seeks solace in a secret “Doghouse bar” with staff.
It was announced last week that Buckingham Palace opted to remove Andrew’s titles and honours, as revelations continue to emerge about his friendship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Charles officially stripped the title of ‘Prince’ from his brother by issuing a Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm a week after the changes were dramatically announced.
Andrew, who continues to deny accusations made against him by the late Virginia Giuffre, has been erased from the Roll of the Peerage.
He and Sarah, who divorced in 1996, have also been forced to move out of the 30-room Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate, having paid a ‘peppercorn rent’ for over 20 years.
Andrew will move into a property at the Royal Family’s Sandringham estate at the King’s own expense as soon as possible, but Sarah will not be joining him.
Insiders say the ex-couple sleep at opposite ends of the property and only meet at meal times where they have “some petty intense conversations about what is going on”, The Sun reports.
A source was quoted: “They are both spending a lot of time alone and it leads to loneliness and soul-searching.
“Andrew rarely goes out and spends quite a lot of time padding around the lodge and ranting and muttering to himself.”
Sarah, 66, is said to be spending her time at a purpose-built bar called The Doghouse constructed behind the mansion, where she talks over her problems with friends and staff.
She is even reported to have asked some trusted employees to stick around for overtime to keep her company.
The ex-Duchess of York is said to be worried about the impact of events on their daughters Princess Beatrice, 37, and Princess Eugenie, 35.
She also has no concrete plans over she will live next, although those close to her say it will not be with Andrew, for the first time in decades.
The source said Sarah “is not in a good place”, and that she is worried about “dark forces” targeting her ex-husband.
They added: “She is particularly fearful for Andrew as she knows he was at the centre of the Epstein scandal.”
On Thursday, it was reported Andrew had been sent a letter summoning him to appear before the US Congress over his “long-standing friendship” with Jeffrey Epstein.
In a letter sent to the former Duke of York, Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee in the US said they believe he may also have crucial information about co-conspirators and enablers of Epstein’s crime.
The letter to Andrew, addressed to Royal Lodge, Windsor Great Park, outlines his “close relationship” with Epstein and refers to a recently revealed 2011 email exchange in which Andrew told him “we are in this together”.
The committee said this “further confirms our suspicion that you may have valuable information about the crimes committed by Mr Epstein and his co-conspirators”, and asks for a response by November 20.
