A sequel to the acclaimed 2010 film The Social Network is officially in the works, but Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is reportedly “p***ed” about the project. According to sources, the tech billionaire is unhappy with the planned follow-up, now titled The Social Reckoning, and his company is threatening to sever ties with Sony Pictures.
Sources say Mark Zuckerberg is not happy with movie sequel
Director-writer Aaron Sorkin is officially returning to the world of Facebook with The Social Reckoning, a sequel to the 2010 hit The Social Network, for which he penned the screenplay. However, according to RadarOnline, sources claim that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is “p***ed” about the project and is unhappy about the film’s portrayal of his company.
The upcoming Sony Pictures film, written and directed by Sorkin himself, is set for release in October 2026. David Fincher, who directed the original, will not return for the sequel. Sorkin’s film will instead shift focus from Facebook’s college dorm-room origins to the platform’s real-world consequences, including its alleged role in the spread of misinformation and political unrest.
A source told the outlet, “Facebook is p**ed and threatening Sony to withdraw from any association.” Notably, the claim hasn’t been confirmed.
The Social Reckoning will center on Facebook’s modern scandals, including the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The movie will depict events surrounding former Meta engineer Frances Haugen (played by Mikey Madison), who leaked internal company documents allegedly exposing the platform’s harmful effects on teens and its supposed complicity in spreading misinformation.
The film will also highlight the work of Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (played by Jeremy Allen White), whose 2021 investigative series, The Facebook Files, reportedly unveiled Meta’s internal awareness of its platforms’ dangers. Other cast members include Jeremy Strong, who will be playing Zuckerberg himself, and Bill Burr.
Neither Meta, Sony Pictures, nor Zuckerberg has issued an official comment on this.
