King Charles III “made a secret deal” with his brother, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, before stripping him of his royal titles and kicking him out of the Royal Lodge in October, according to the Daily Mail.
The former prince, who had held tight to his “iron-clad” lease for years, “finally caved,” royal commentator Richard Eden reported in a story published on Thursday, November 13, after “it was made clear to Andrew that, while his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson would also lose her title, there would be no action taken against their daughters,” Princess Beatrice, 37, and Princess Eugenie, 35.
The king also agreed to give the princesses “new official royal roles” — and has already made good on his promise, Eden reported.
Beatrice was announced as a new Deputy Patron of Outward Bound on Thursday, November 6.
“It was hugely significant,” Eden explained of her appointment to the charity, which was a favorite of the late Prince Philip’s.
Andrew’s eldest daughter will also continue to be one of the seven Counsellors of State, who can legally stand in for the king if he is ill or abroad. (Andrew, 65, also remains on the list, but the palace has confirmed that only “working members” of the family will be called upon.)
“With the King’s approval, we can expect more of such public engagements by Beatrice and Eugenie, to the surprise of their critics, who worry that they are tainted by the controversies surrounding their parents,” Eden wrote.
Andrew and Fergie, 66, have both expressed regret for their connections with late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, while vehemently denying any wrongdoing.
A spokesperson for Fergie shared a statement to People addressing the reports of an email she wrote calling Epstein a “supreme friend” in 2011: “The Duchess spoke of her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago, and as they have always been her first thoughts are with his victims. Like many people, she was taken in by his lies. As soon as she was aware of the extent of the allegations against him, she not only cut off contact but condemned him publicly, to the extent that he then threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with paedophilia. She does not resile from anything she said then. This email was sent in the context of advice the Duchess was given to try to assuage Epstein and his threats.”
