Carden, who was born in January 1980, admitted in an interview with Vulture that when she was 12, she was inspired by American rock band Smashing Pumpkins’ bassist D’Arcy Wretzky, and decided to add an apostrophe to her name.
Carden’s mother is reportedly Jewish with Russian, Romanian and German heritage while her father is Turkish-Greek.
She recalls in an interview with Mercury News that she was nine when she realised she wanted to become an actor after watching her father, Dennis Erokan – who founded Bam Magazine, a San Francisco-based music magazine – star in a production of the play Our Town.
Determined to make it as an actress, Carden studied theatre at Southern Oregon University and moved to New York after her graduation to chase her dreams.
