Christy Martin addressed the criticism aimed at Sydney Sweeney after Ruby Rose publicly attacked Sweeney over the biopic about Martin’s life.
Martin wrote on Instagram, “I’ve always been a fighter. My life reflected that in every way and now I fight for others.” She stated, “The past few days I have seen some people attack my friend Sydney Sweeney,” adding that Sweeney “worked her ass off for this film” and “worked her ass off for me.” Martin concluded, “She is my friend and ally.”
Rose had earlier posted on Threads that Sweeney “ruined the film,” calling her “a cretin” and stating, “Christy deserved better.” She claimed she had once been attached to the project, writing, “The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry.” She added, “Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting.”
Rose also criticized Sweeney’s perceived political leanings. She wrote, “None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us.” Her comments referenced long-running online scrutiny over Sweeney’s family party photos from 2022 and controversy surrounding an American Eagle advertisement praised by Donald Trump.
Sweeney told Variety in 2023 that there were “misinterpretations” of the party and told GQ that reports about the American Eagle stock reaction were “all made up.”
Christy opened to one of the worst wide-release box office debuts with a $600 per screen average across about 2,184 theaters and an opening weekend total of $1.3 million. It holds a 65 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sweeney responded on Instagram, writing, “If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded.” She added, “Christy has been the most impactful project of my life.”
Martin earlier told audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival, “I think it’s awesome,” when asked about Sweeney’s performance.
