Naked Gun director David Zucker has criticized the new reboot‘s creative approach. In a recent interview, Zucker has publicly accused the new film’s creative team of “copying” the approach of the original film.
David Zucker discusses Liam Neeson’s Naked Gun reboot
David Zucker, director of the original Naked Gun films, has shared his thoughts about the direction of the new reboot led by Liam Neeson and produced by Seth MacFarlane. In a recent Woman’s World interview, Zucker said that MacFarlane “totally missed” the style that he established decades ago with Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams.
The director said, “My brother, Jerry, and our partner, Jim Abrahams, started doing spoof comedies 50 years ago, and we originated our own style — and we did that so well that it looks easy, evidently.” He added, “People started copying it, like Seth MacFarlane for the new Naked Gun. He totally missed it.”
The director also raised concerns about the scale of the new production. He argued that large budgets are at odds with spoof comedy. “Big budgets and comedy are opposites, and in the new Naked Gun, you could see that they spent a lot of money on scenes full of technical pizzazz while trying to copy our style,” he explained.
Zucker also suggested that financial factor played a major role in reviving the franchise. He noted, “Everybody’s in it for the money now, and that feels like the only reason why they wanted to do a new Naked Gun.”
Zucker explained that he and his partners developed 15 comedy rules that guided their work. He explained that he teaches those principles in the hope that future filmmakers will “do it right” if they attempt a movie in the same style.
