Labubu Movie In Early Development At Sony

Deadline has confirmed that a movie based on the Labubu doll plush line is in early works at Sony.

The Culver City studio acquired feature film rights to the Chinese doll. There are no creative attachments at this point and no decisions have been made as to whether this would be an animated or live-action film.

The studio had no comment.

The dolls were created by Hong Kong native and European-based designer Kasing Lung in 2015. Early on they were manufactured by How2 Work before Chinese retailer Pop Mart took over the line and began selling them in 2019.

Labubu was part of Lung’s story series The Monsters, which was inspired by Nordic folklore.

Although Labubu was initially popular in East and Southeast Asia, the craze made its way to the U.S. where a black market resides for the dolls at six-figure prices. Pop Mart built up demand for the brand by selling the dolls in blind boxes: The buyer doesn’t know what type of doll they’re getting until a box is opened, making them expensive on the auction market and even at retail. Celebrities such as K-pop group Blackpink member Lisa have worn Labubu as bling, upping their value even more.

In Pop Mart’s 2024 annual report, it noted that the The Monsters lines generates $430 million, equal to 23.3% of total revenue for the year. In the first half of 2025 The Monsters generated $670 million, repping close to 35% of Pop Mart’s revenue for the period.
