Spotify is giving fans and artists a deeper look into the creative process behind their favourite music with a new update to its credits system, and two new features arriving soon for Premium subscribers.
The platform is expanding its song credits to include a much wider range of contributors. In addition to the usual performers, songwriters, and producers, Spotify will now highlight everyone involved in bringing a track to life, from engineers and mixers to background vocalists and session musicians. The company says the goal is to shine a brighter light on the people whose work often goes unrecognised, and to make music credits more complete and transparent.
Alongside the expanded credits, Spotify is previewing two new Premium-only features: SongDNA and About the Song.
SongDNA is an interactive tool built into the Now Playing screen. It helps listeners explore the deeper structure of a track, showing how songs are connected through collaborations, production credits, samples, and covers. Much of the sample and cover information is powered by data from WhoSampled, which Spotify has recently acquired to strengthen its musical insights.
The second feature, About the Song, lets fans swipe through cards that offer background details, fun facts, and behind-the-scenes stories about the track they’re listening to. These snippets are designed to give context on the creative inspiration, recording process, or cultural impact behind a song.
Before these features roll out to the public, artists and their teams can preview them through Spotify for Artists. This early access period allows creators to review and correct any credit information, ensure accuracy, and provide feedback on how the new tools display their work.
The expanded song credits are rolling out first on mobile, with desktop support coming later. SongDNA and About the Song will launch for Premium users next year.
