Kevin Spacey announced that he’s homeless in a new interview this week.
Speaking to The Telegraph in a piece published on Nov. 19, the two-time Oscar-winning actor claims his legal costs stemming from multiple sexual assault trials have sent him into economic hardship.
“I’m living in hotels, I’m living in Airbnbs,” Spacey told the outlet. “I’m going where the work is. I literally have no home, that’s what I’m attempting to explain… The costs over these last seven years have been astronomical. I’ve had very little coming in and everything going out.”
Spacey became a prominent figure in the public discourse around the #MeToo movement after actor Anthony Rapp accused him in 2017 of a sexual advance in 1986, when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 27.
A New York jury found in 2022 that he did not molest actor Anthony Rapp. The following year, a U.K. court found Spacey not guilty of nine sexual assault charges from four complainants. Other charges and lawsuits have been dropped, and Spacey has denied all allegations.
Despite his legal victories, Spacey’s film career collapsed following the allegations. He told the outlet he believes a return to acting depends on approval from a respected industry figure.
“We are in touch with some extremely powerful people who want to put me back to work,” he said. “And that will happen in its right time. But I will also say what I think the industry seems to be waiting for is to be given permission — by someone who is in some position of enormous respect and authority.”
Spacey suggested directors Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino could provide that endorsement, telling The Telegraph, “So, my feeling is if Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino call [my manager] tomorrow, it will be over.”
Some actors have publicly supported Spacey’s return to Hollywood. Sharon Stone called him a “genius,” and Liam Neeson said, “our industry needs him and misses him greatly.”
