On Oct. 4, 2024, Donald Glover canceled the remainder of his Childish Gambino tour in North America in Europe due to a serious health issue, saying he had surgery scheduled and “needed time out to heal.”
This weekend, the 42-year-old artist opened up about what he was dealing with during a performance at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Saturday night. Speaking with the crowd, Glover revealed he suffered a stroke last year.
‘I’m letting everybody down’
Glover was on stage at Dodgers Stadium last night when he began detailing his health ordeal.
“I was having lots of fun, really loving seeing you guys out there, and I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana,” Glover told fans. “I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital, and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.'”
“And the first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx,'” Glover joked, referring to the actor’s severe 2023 stroke. “That’s really like the second thing. The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.'”
Glover’s 2024 New World Tour only included 18 shows because of its premature ending. The Atlanta star admitted to feeling even more guilt as his list of ailments piled up.
“I broke my foot,” he recalled. “I always promise Ireland I’m gonna be there, and I still haven’t been, and they found a hole in my heart, so I had to do surgery, and then I had to have another surgery.”
A new perspective
Obviously, the most important news here is that not only did Glover survive, he recovered well enough to resume performing.
The “This is America” rapper told the crowd that the hardships gave him a fresh outlook on life and his career.
“They say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one,” Glover said. “You got one life, guys. And I gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing. I love singing and performing for you guys.
“You should be living your life how you want because if we have to do this again, it can only get better.”
