Following heartfelt tributes and a skipped elimination, “Dancing with the Stars” is getting back to business.
During the night’s “Wicked” tribute night on Tuesday, Oct. 21 – in which director Jon M. Chu joined as guest judge – one star was eventually eliminated: Scott Hoying.
The singer-songwriter and Pentatonix member, 34, and castmates including “Boy Meets World” alum Danielle Fishel, “The Parent Trap” star Elaine Hendrix and Australian conservationist Robert Irwin, were tasked with performing to tracks from the Broadway movie adaptation and its sequel, November’s “Wicked: For Good.”
With partner Rylee Arnold, Hoying danced a contemporary routine to “The Wizard and I,” with the singer playing as the Wizard and Arnold playing Elphaba. Dinged for their choppy transitions, the pair went on to score 28 out of 40.
“I feel really … lucky. Genuinely,” he told “Extra” after his elimination. “And I’m so sad to go, but I just can’t believe it. Like, my husband and I were standing face-to-face announcing our baby on the show, that’s crazy. That’s more than I could’ve ever dreamed for.”
During the week of Oct. 14, amid the Dedication Night round, Hoying performed a sweet foxtrot to his song “Parallel,” which opened with Hoying singing a line from the song to his husband, Mark Hoying, and revealed earlier in the episode that the couple is expecting their first child via surrogacy.
None of the contestants was eliminated during the Dedication Night week. The judges’ scores and audience votes from the night were carried over. “We couldn’t send anyone home tonight on such a special night,” cohost Julianne Hough said at the time.
Hoying’s ouster follows Hilaria Baldwin‘s shock elimination the week of Oct. 7. The move came after Hilaria, 41, earned stellar reviews from judges and fans for her Star Wars-inspired performance for the show’s Disney Night round.
