The holiday season is traditionally a time of joy and togetherness. But after a year that’s been overshadowed by scandal, the Prince and Princess of Wales are grappling with what may be the royal family’s toughest test – a reunion with Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex!
New reports suggest Harry, 41, and his wife Meghan, 44, are set to return to the UK for their first British Christmas in five years. They have been invited to Princess Diana’s childhood home, Althorp House, by Harry’s uncle, Earl Spencer.
It’s a situation palace insiders describe as William and Kate’s “worst nightmare”.
A well-placed source reports, “They will, as always, be at Sandringham with King Charles, Queen Camilla and the wider royals, but the thought of crossing paths with the Sussexes has left the couple deeply rattled. Kate’s adamant they won’t ruin their family Christmas.”
A chance to reconnect with family
In 2024, Harry reportedly turned down the same invite from his uncle, 61, saying the timing wasn’t right. This year, however, the prince seems keen to expose his kids to their British heritage. Prince Archie is six, and Princess Lilibet is four. He has even suggested they may go to school in the UK, despite Meghan’s concerns.
“I would love a reconciliation with my family,” Harry declared earlier this year.
“There’s no point in continuing to fight any more. Life is precious.”
Our insider adds, “Harry’s adamant he wants to build a bridge back to the family. He sees this as a chance to reset, but Meghan worries about the security environment and what travelling with two small children under such arrangements might mean in practice.”
Meanwhile, William and Kate, both 43, aren’t ready to reconcile with the Sussexes any time soon. We’re told they’ll do whatever it takes to protect the royal legacy of their kids, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven.
Kate and Meghan’s tension poses the biggest challenge
“William still feels utterly betrayed with everything that’s happened,” shares the source.
“He’s not ready to forgive – and Kate is furious. She doesn’t want to be forced into the same room as Meghan, full stop. “For Kate in particular, the tension with Meghan has become the hardest battle. The feud between the two women runs even deeper than anything between the brothers. They just can’t stand each other. “It’s tough because Kate has a lot on her plate. She’s still following the advice of her doctors, which is to rest and avoid stressful situations, but she’s mindful this needs to be managed delicately and that’s no easy task.”
Even if their paths don’t cross at Christmas, it seems the Waleses and Sussexes are on course for a US collision in 2026. William and Harry are both making top-secret security arrangements to support England and Scotland at next year’s FIFA World Cup.
There are also plans for the royal family to mark the 250th anniversary of Independence Day with an official tour of the US. An early July itinerary is now being drafted for the King, 77, and Queen, 78, and possibly for William and Kate as well.
Charles caught between his sons and grandchildren
“It’s one of the biggest diplomatic moments of the decade,” explains a senior courtier.
“The King is to lead the charge, but William and Kate are ready to fly the flag. The palace wants them involved. “This isn’t just another royal tour – it’s a statement. America has become the Sussexes’ playground, but the Waleses are showing they can own that stage too, with grace, duty and real star power.”
Charles is grateful for his eldest son and daughter-in-law’s support. Behind closed doors, however, we’re told the divide between the two brothers puts him in a very tricky position.
Our source says, “If Harry and Meghan visit the UK with their children, Charles will no doubt want to spend time with them. He hasn’t seen his grandchildren in more than three years.”
Kate reigns supreme
The princess might be feeling stressed, but it didn’t show. She and William attended a formal state banquet in honour of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Windsor Castle last week.
Wearing the rarely seen Oriental Circlet Tiara, originally set with 2,600 diamonds for Queen Victoria, Kate sparkled in a sequined Jenny Packham gown at the dinner. The event was also attended by supermodel Claudia Schiffer and film composer Hans Zimmer.
