In a bit on a recent episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Prince Harry interrupted Stephen Colbert‘s monologue to ask him where the auditions were for the fictional Hallmark movie Gingerbread Christmas Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska. When the host asked the Spare author why he wanted to be in the movie, Harry replied, “You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies, and you’re clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?” When Colbert refuted the claim, the father of two replied, referencing President Donald Trump, “Really? I hear you elected a king.”

Journalist Tom Sykes thinks Prince Harry should lose his royal titles. “I think the royal family has no real choice. Harry believes he’s free to speak his mind now that he’s no longer a working royal,” he wrote on his The Royalist Substack. Sykes went on to point out that the Duke of Sussex isn’t “truly living as Harry Wales, a private citizen.” Instead, “he’s Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex,” and “in the American imagination, he still carries the full aura of a prince — a representative of the monarchy.”

Tom Sykes feels King Charles III should send a message that being a working member of The Firm is a serious matter. “A global audience does not grasp that [Prince] Harry isn’t still a part of the Windsor family business. Charles and [Prince] William may be hundreds of miles away in Balmoral or Windsor, but in the American mind, they are standing just offstage as Harry delivers his punchlines,” he wrote. “The titles must be removed, not as punishment but for clarity. Removing them draws a clear blue line between Prince Harry the royal and Harry the private citizen. It protects the monarchy from his volatility.”

It’s unclear if King Charles III will take action to strip Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, of their titles. Prince William might be more likely to pull the trigger when he takes the throne. “They are on borrowed time and vulnerable now, because I don’t think there is anything they can do to reverse the hurt they have caused Kate [Middleton] and William, and William is still furious,” biographer Tom Bower told The Mirror of Harry and Meghan.

King Charles III recently removed Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s titles over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. “For [Prince] Harry, it was an unbelievable shock that the king could strip Andrew of his titles — including prince — and it changes everything,” Tom Bower said. “He must really fear that [Prince] William will strip him, Meghan [Markle] and [their two] children of their titles when he succeeds to the throne.”
