If ever the shallowness of modern celebrity was laid bare, it was surely the wedding of three-time Olympic champion swimmer Adam Peaty and nepo-baby influencer Holly Ramsay, who tied the knot at Bath Abbey on Saturday December 27. Notably absent from their big day was most of the groom’s family after a bitter falling out ahead of the nuptials.
While family fallouts are not a new phenomenon, there is usually a heartbreaking reason at the core of the argument. However, in Adam and Holly’s case, the entire row seems to stem from that most 21st-century of problems – his family simply didn’t fit the aesthetic. The first inklings of a feud came in November when insiders claimed Holly, who is the daughter of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, reportedly excluded her future mother-in-law from her hen party over fears she “might have stuck out a bit.” Heaven forbid Holly would just let her hair down and enjoy the occasion, which boasted guests such as Victoria Beckham. It clearly had to be Insta-friendly as well.
At the time a source close to the 25-year-old newlywed claimed: “The Ramsays are wealthy and they enjoy the finer things in life because they can afford it. Conversely, the Peatys are far less refined. Adam has a glamorous new life now, and it seems he has left his family behind.”
For context, his mother was already not invited to their starry wedding, which saw a number of celebrities watching the couple say their vows. While no official reason has been given for Adam’s sudden falling out with his family, the disagreement is thought to have begun after Caroline reportedly clashed with the bride’s father at the couple’s engagement party over the exclusion of family members and the event being filmed for a docuseries.
In a nutshell, from the information available, it appears Adam’s family, who supported him through his Olympic endeavours and made numerous sacrifices and worked tirelessly to support his demanding training schedule so he could make it to the top of his chosen sport, no longer fit his aesthetic.
I am quite sure the row has now escalated beyond this, and it has completely turned into a “he said she said” scenario online. But at its crux, the issue seems to be Adam choosing his newly glossy image and in-laws over his family.
This is the most shallow and childish reason I have ever heard for a family fall-out – even by celebrity standards. We’ve seen Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leave the royal family, and Brooklyn Beckham turning his back on his parents, but at least there seemed to be valid reasons behind the feuds. Until we know everything, this seems like a shallow fall-out to me. While I’m sure the Peatys have a black sheep and a skeleton or two, the whole basis of Adam ostracising his family seems to be the belief that they are no longer good enough for him now that he moves in “glossier” circles.
In my opinion, Adam should be ashamed of himself. Equally guilty are his new in-laws, the Ramsays, who have often waxed lyrical about their own strong family unit, but don’t seem to care about nurturing that with Adam’s side of the family.
This may well blow over at some point, but Adam has made a huge mistake and done his mother, who was his greatest supporter, a huge wrong that can never be undone by excluding her from his wedding, and his shallowness has been laid bare for the world to see.
