Michael B. Jordan reflects on one movie role that impacted his career
Michael B. Jordan recently opened up about his major turning point in his career since he makes his debut in Black Panther in 2018.
The actor revealed his Erik Killmonger role in the MCU movie impacted his mental health to the point that he sought professional help,
Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, Michael said, “I think Erik didn’t experience that… He had a lot of betrayal, a lot of failed systems around him that shaped him and his anger and his frustration.”
During his role preparation, the Sinners actor recalled he didn’t speak to his family and therefore, he felt isolated.
“I went into my hole and tried to live like he would have lived for a bit, whatever that process was,” remarked the 38-year-old.
However, Michael went on saying that the role stuck with him for a long time.
“I went to therapy, talked about it, found a way to kind of just decompress. And I think at that point, I was still learning that I needed to decompress from a character,” explained the Creed II actor.
Michael pointed out that there’s “no blueprint to this” noting, “Acting is a solo journey a lot of times.”
“Auditioning by yourself, practicing by yourself. There are a lot of preparation and the experience and the journey,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Michael mentioned that his therapy sessions “spiraled into a bigger conversation and self-discovery,” adding that therapy “is necessary … especially for men”.
“So, that’s something I’m not ashamed of at all and very proud of,” he stated.
Before concluding, Michael further said, “It definitely helped me throughout the years and to this day of trying to be a good communicator and a well-rounded person, inside and out.”
