Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have previously appeared to try and steal Princess Catherine’s spotlight on her birthday. The couple, who stepped down from royal duties in 2020, have been largely estranged from the Royal Family for a few years – with Harry only having met King Charles on a number of occasions since their move to the US.
Meghan has not set foot on UK soil since September 2022 – and is not thought to have had contact with the King or the Prince and Princess of Wales for some time. Despite their lack of contact, Meghan and Harry have attempted to take the spotlight away from Catherine on her birthday on at least two occasions.
The couple shared the shock statement that they were planning to step away from royal duties and to “work to become financially independent” the day before Catherine’s 38th birthday in 2020.
Sharing to Instagram on January 8, 2020, the couple’s statement read: “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.
“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.
“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages…”
They concluded, adding: “Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support”.
That wasn’t the only attempt the couple made as on January 10, 2023, the day after Catherine’s 41st birthday, Harry released his bombshell memoir Spare.
As well as claims about Queen Camilla and Prince William, Harry included hurtful claims about his sister-in-law’s relationship with his wife.
In one section of his book, Harry, despite reported claims prior to its release, wrote that it was Meghan who cried, not Catherine.
