Dave & Buster’s Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ:PLAY) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 32% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 21% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, Dave & Buster’s Entertainment may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or “P/S”) ratio of 0.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Hospitality industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.6x and even P/S higher than 4x aren’t out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we’d need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Dave & Buster’s Entertainment’s Recent Performance Look Like?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Dave & Buster’s Entertainment’s revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn’t going to get any better. If you still like the company, you’d be hoping this isn’t the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it’s out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Dave & Buster’s Entertainment would need to produce sluggish growth that’s trailing the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company’s revenue growth last year wasn’t something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 4.1%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 21% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the eleven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 4.6% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 19%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Dave & Buster’s Entertainment’s P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren’t comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

Despite Dave & Buster’s Entertainment’s share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn’t sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company’s future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Dave & Buster’s Entertainment’s analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn’t great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It’s hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
