Fans are showing their support for Victoria Beckham in the most meaningful way: by sending her 2001 single, “Not Such an Innocent Girl,” to No. 1 on the iTunes chart in the U.K. The surge comes shortly after her and David Beckham‘s eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, shared a bombshell statement addressing his strained relationship with his parents.
According to Us Weekly, the song, which was the first single from her eponymous debut solo album, reached the top spot on Thursday, Jan. 22. At the time of its initial release in 2001, it peaked at No. 6.
Released the same year the Spice Girls disbanded, the track marked Victoria’s move to a solo career alongside her bandmates, all of whom went on to achieve chart-topping success. According to the outlet, she was the only member who hadn’t reached No. 1—until now.
In a 2001 interview about her solo project, Victoria opened up about why she chose “Not Such an Innocent Girl” as her debut single, sharing that it was meant to challenge public perceptions of her. The track was meant to show a more confident, multifaceted side of herself.
“I just thought it was a good starting point, a good example of what is on the album,” she began. “A nice message in there, just because you think you know me, doesn’t mean that you are, looking in a bit deeper, there’s another person there.”
“I think it’s the first thing that I’ve done that’s totally me, well, two of me,” she added.
While the renewed success of her 25-year-old song is certainly something to celebrate, the circumstances surrounding its resurgence are more complicated. The Beckham family has made headlines following a series of Instagram Story posts shared by Brooklyn on Monday, Jan. 19. USA Today, which published the full statement, reported that Brooklyn claimed he had “been controlled by my parents most of my life” and alleged that they had tried to “ruin” his relationship with his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham.
A few of the bombshell claims in Brooklyn’s statement included his mother having “cancelled making Nicola’s dress in the eleventh hour despite how excited she was to wear her design, forcing her to urgently find a new dress.” Additionally, Brooklyn alleged that Victoria “hijacked” his first dance with his wife on their wedding day.
