Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition in South Bend

SOUTH BEND — The South Bend Museum of Art will display more than 500 pieces created by local students in the Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition from Feb. 6 to April 13 at 120 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The exhibition will showcase artwork from middle and high school students across Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan, according to a press release.

The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be accompanied by a series of events, including the introduction of the Community Choice Award.

More than 3,400 student submissions

SBMA serves as the regional affiliate for the national Scholastic Art Awards for students in grades 7-12. The exhibition provides a professional platform for young artists to have their work juried, exhibited, and celebrated. For many students, the Scholastics program represents the first time their creative voice is publicly recognized.

Each year, SBMA receives more than 3,400 student submissions, with more than 1,200 students from 19 counties represented in this year’s exhibition.

The exhibition will open with a public reception during South Bend’s First Friday event from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 6. During this event, attendees can begin voting for the Community Choice Award. On Feb. 28, from noon to 5 p.m., the museum will host a series of Scholastic Art Awards ceremonies honoring more than 1,200 recipients of the Honorable Mention, Silver Key, and Gold Key awards, along with national recognitions and community prizes.

Community Choice Award voting opens Feb. 6

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite artwork in person, with voting open from Feb. 6 to March 15. Each visitor is allowed one vote, and the Community Choice Award winner will be announced during the Scholastic Showcase on March 27.

The award aims to engage the community and celebrate the artistic achievements of young artists.

“Adding the Community Choice Award gives our community a meaningful way to engage with and celebrate student creativity,” SBMA Executive Director Lisa M. Shaffer said in the press release. “These events honor not only young artists, but also the teachers, families, and communities who support them.”

The Scholastic Showcase, set for 5:30 to 8 p.m. March 27, will bring together students, educators, donors, business leaders and civic partners. The evening will feature the announcement of the Community Choice Award, special student awards, including cash prizes, and a teacher recognition award with brief remarks. The showcase aims to highlight the broader impact of arts education and the museum’s role as a regional convener.
