While many royals make a point to attend the Summer Olympic
Games, far fewer are willing to brave the Winter Olympics. However,
the Milano Cortina 2026 Games saw a handful of royals ready to
start another round of competition.
The Princess Royal is currently representing the British Royal
Family at the 2026 Winter Olympics, along with her husband, Sir Tim
Lawrence. Princess Anne attended a reception prior to the couple
enjoying the Opening Ceremonies. Her Royal Highness has been a
member of the International Olympic Committee since 1988 and
competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics.
Earlier on Friday, Princess Anne shared a message on social
media cheering on Team GB.
‘As your competitions begin, know that you will have the
support of the nation. On behalf of us all, I wish you the very
best of luck.’
Prince Albert II of Monaco joined Princess Anne as both an IOC
member and Olympic athlete. Albert competed in both two-man and
four-man bobsled for Monaco between 1988 and 2002.
Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg also attended the Opening
Ceremonies as an IOC member. He has been a member of the
International Olympic Committee since 1988.
The Dutch Royal Family also had a strong showing at the Opening
Ceremonies, with the King, Queen, and Princess of Orange all
cheering on the Dutch athletes. Willem-Alexander, Maxima, and
Amalia were kitted out with orange puffer jackets and scarves.
