Daniel Radcliffe says Finn Wolfhard warned him about “SNL”’s “Heated Rivalry”-“Harry Potter” spoof

He’s the Boy Who Was Warned.

Daniel Radcliffe is revealing that Finn Wolfhard did him a solid by giving him a heads-up about Saturday Night Live‘s joint spoof of Harry Potter and Heated Rivalry, titled “Heated Wizardry,” before it aired.

“Weirdly, I had met Finn Wolfhard a few weeks before, randomly, and we chatted for a bit,” Radcliffe told Rolling Stone in a new interview. “And then he texted me the day before it aired, being like, ‘Hey, just so you know, we’re doing a Harry Potter sketch.'”

Radcliffe added that he hadn’t seen the megahit series Heated Rivalry yet, but he is “very aware” of it.

“My girlfriend is a huge fan,” he said, noting that he has now seen SNL‘s mash-up of the gay hockey romance with the magical franchise that made him a star. “I’m sure there are jokes I was missing, but it was very funny and sweet. I’m always happy to see other versions of that. It makes me laugh.”

Stranger Things star Wolfhard made his SNL hosting debut last month, and one of the most popular segments from the episode featured him playing a version of Radcliffe’s original role, in which he falls in love — or, more accurately, lust — with his red-haired best friend, Ron Weasley (Ben Marshall). And of course, instead of playing hockey, they were Quidditch players at Hogwarts.

The spoof leaned into the breakout success of the Crave-HBO Max drama Heated Rivalry, starring Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie as professional hockey players who are arch-rivals but secretly engage in a steamy love affair spanning more than a decade.

This is hardly the first time SNL has spoofed Harry Potter, but the most notable example was when Radcliffe himself reprised his signature role in 2012. During his only time hosting the NBC comedy series, he starred in a sketch called “Harry Potter Epilogue” in which Harry still hasn’t left Hogwarts, despite graduating a decade earlier.

“I have always been fairly fine with [always being known for Harry Potter],” Radcliffe said. “I don’t need people to forget that I did that in order to enjoy stuff I’m doing now. In fact, it often leads people to seek me out in other things. Coming out of Potter, I was probably more stressed about it. The first time I did a musical, I went into rehearsal rooms like, ‘F‑‑‑, everyone thinks, ‘What’s this movie kid doing here, and is he going to be any good?” It’s nice to not walk in feeling those things anymore.”

Radcliffe next stars in NBC’s new comedy series The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, opposite Tracy Morgan; Radcliffe plays a disgraced filmmaker looking to redeem his career. He previously told Entertainment Weekly his character is unlike anything he’s done before on screen.

“He does much worse things than a lot of the characters that I’ve played before,” the Tony-winning actor said. “There are a few episodes where I did come up to [creator] Robert [Carlock] and be like, ‘You are really banking on the idea that people will just like me and forgive me for doing some things.’ There’s probably a couple moments in the series where I would’ve kicked me out of that house, but I do get my comeuppance — as I should.”

The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins premieres Jan. 18 on NBC. Read more about the new series in EW’s cover story.
