Paul Bettany admits he ‘misses Heath Ledger too much’ to rewatch his film after his death
Nearly two decades after Heath Ledger’s death Paul Bettany has shared rare and emotional memories of his former co-star.
Ledger died on January 22, 2008 but his legacy continues through films like The Dark Knight and A Knight’s Tale.
Now 18 years later Bettany is opening up about the lasting impact of their friendship.
Speaking to a publication in February 2026 Bettany pushed back on the long-held narrative that Ledger was defined by darkness.
“So much has been said about Heath and darkness, but the moment you saw him, he just radiated light, happiness, and joy,” Bettany said.
He described Ledger as “a ball of creativity and charisma” adding “So very alive that even today it’s difficult to imagine him dead. I often find myself wondering what beautiful things he would have made.”
Bettany also recalled a moment from the set of A Knight’s Tale the 2001 cult favourite that helped launch Ledger into global stardom.
According to Bettany Ledger once got a symbolic tattoo while filming.
“It was a tiny circle with a circle around it and then a bigger circle around that, like a target,” Bettany explained.
“He said, ‘That’s me in the middle. That circle is the Earth, and the other circle is the universe.’ I said ‘You’ve put yourself right in the middle? I’ve never been that confident.’”
Bettany added that Ledger carried that confidence “in the most joyful, winning way.”
He described filming the movie as “a magical time” calling it a story “about a boy from nowhere who changes his stars.”
Despite the film’s lasting popularity Bettany admitted he has not rewatched A Knight’s Tale since its 2001 release.
At Comic Con Bettany said: “It was a really long time ago. It was like another lifetime ago.”
“I saw the film when it first came out. I’ve never seen it again since. There are lots of reasons for that, and just one of them is that I miss Heath too much,” he said.
Eighteen years after his passing Ledger remains one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors.
For Bettany however the memories are personal and still emotional.
