Things will look a bit different for the royal family’s Commonwealth Day.

As King Charles III, Prince William and more members of the royal family gather at Westminster Abbey on March 9 to mark the day of celebration in London, the BBC announced this will be the first time in 37 years it won’t broadcast the event.

“Our decision not to broadcast the Commonwealth Day Ceremony in the same way we’ve done in previous years reflects the difficult choices we have to make in light of our funding challenges,” the BBC said in a statement to HELLO! “We can confirm BBC News plans to cover the service across its platforms, including the BBC One bulletins and rolling news channel.”

Instead of showing the multi-faith service—which celebrates the 56 member states of the Commonwealth—BBC will air its reality TV show Escape the Country in its usual timeslot. The BBC has aired the ceremony every year since 1989, expect for 2021 when it canceled the broadcast due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Commonwealth Day marks one of the few days a year that senior members of the royal family step out together. And indeed, as usual, King Charles and Prince William are expected to be joined by their wives Queen Camilla and Kate Middleton.

This celebration will also mark the royal family’s first joint public appearance since Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (formally Prince Andrew) was arrested and then released on Feb. 19 on suspicion of misconduct in public office over his alleged ties to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In preparation for the big day, Charles—who assumed the crown in 2023 following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II—offered a preview of this year’s message.

“It is often in such testing moments that the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth is most clearly revealed,” a preview of the King’s message shared by BBC on March 7 read, adding the Commonwealth is “force for good, grounded in community, committed to the kind of restorative sustainability that has a return on investment, enriched by culture, steadfast in its care for our planet, and united in friendship and in the service of its people.”
